Unveiling the Rich Narrative of Our
Stained Glass Windows
Stained glass windows first adorned Christian churches in the 11th and 12th centuries and served two purposes; to provide beauty and light and to provide instruction for worshipers.
At that time, very few people could read and the Bible and Mass were not yet translated into the local language. The windows were designed to tell stories drawn from scripture. Our windows are no exception as most depict the story of Jesus’ life.
The first two windows to be installed at either end of the church depict The Resurrection and The Last Supper. The nave windows were not installed until January 1915 – having been delayed in shipping due to World War One.
The Ressurection
This window sits above the east entrance to the nave.
It is dedicated to the Glory of God and in memory of Edward and Elizabeth Wilkinson.
The Last Supper
This window is above our altar.
It is dedicated in memory of the Revd. Sherlock A Bronson, D.D., L. L. D., Rector of Grace Church from 1870 to 1889.
Christ Amongst the
Doctors
Dedicated to the Glory of God, and a Thank Offering of the St. Agnes Guild.
Christ Blessing
the Children
Dedicated to the Glory of God and in loving memory of Louise Orwig Maxwell
The Transfiguration
Dedicated to the Glory of God and in memory of Huntington Brown (1849-1914)
Renewed and Revitalized
Our Organ
In March 2020, a break-in occurred and our 1975 Schantz organ was thoroughly dusted by a fire extinguisher. Since the organ needed removed for cleaning, we used this opportunity to renew and secure the instrument’s future. We contracted J. Clark Wilson & Associates who partnered with GT Organ Associates to complete the removal, cleaning, purchase of replacements, reinstallation, and revoicing.
If you count all partial and complete ranks as individual, there are 19 Schantz Organ Company sets, 10 from Pels Organ Company, and 7 from other builders. Those are not counted as complete ranks and some are only an octave or two, but the majority of the organ is still Schantz pipework. We also left the swell’s 2 rank Plein Jeu in storage (along with the drawknob cap) should someone wish to reinstate a mixture somewhere down the line.
