Safari Msalaba 2024: A Pilgrimage of Faith and Cultural Exchange

In November 2024, five pilgrims from Ohio will embark on a transformative journey to Tanzania, participating in the annual Safari Msalaba pilgrimage. This 90-mile, 6-day walk through the Diocese of Tanga honors the memory of the Rt. Rev. Frank Weston, a beloved Anglo-Catholic Bishop who passed away a century ago.

The Journey

The pilgrimage begins at a miraculous pool of water in the East Usumbara Mountains, where Bishop Weston once prayed for water. From there, the travelers will make their way to Holy Cross Church in Magila, the site of a convent founded in penance for slavery in the mid-1800s

Meet the Pilgrims

Our diverse group of pilgrims, ranging in age from 16 to 69, includes:

  • Fr. Daniel Orr: The organizer of the Safari Msalaba pilgrimage, guiding the Ohio group through this spiritual and cultural journey in Tanzania.
  • James: Seeking a first-person perspective on a contrasting lifestyle
  • Lisa: Aiming to reset her worldview and gain a global perspective
  • Valerie: Looking to reconnect spiritually and find clarity
  • Lilly: Eager to experience other cultures and grow in her relationship with God
  • Tucker: Embracing the opportunity for “amazement” beyond normal tourism

Each pilgrim is working to raise $5,000 to participate in this life-changing experience

Cultural Immersion

Participants will encounter a richly communal environment in Tanzania, where greetings are an endless sport and displays of frustration are discouraged. They’ll navigate language barriers, with most locals speaking Kisambaa, the tribal language of the Tanga region.

Economic Perspective

To provide context, here’s what one US dollar can buy in Tanzania:

ItemQuantity
Milk (fresh from cow)1 liter
Locally brewed beer2 liters
Bananas1 large bunch
White bread (factory)2 loaves

Pilgrims are encouraged to donate to churches rather than spend individually.

Supporting the Journey

The Diocese of Ohio has covered airfare and some expenses, but additional support is welcome. Donations can be made to Grace Episcopal Church by clicking here or by mailing a check to 41 Bowman St., Mansfield, OH 44903. Please be sure to note that the donation is for Tanzania.

A Prayer for Balance

May this journey foster understanding, growth, and a fair balance between our two worlds. Amen.

As the pilgrims prepare for their departure on November 1, 2024, let’s keep them in our thoughts and prayers. This Safari Msalaba promises to be a profound experience of faith, cultural exchange, and personal transformation.
